Rostov the Great

Rostov the Great - a city with a millennial history, a center of culture and art of ancient Russia, the mainstay of the state.

The town was founded on the banks of the river Pizhermy flowing into the lake of Nero. In the ancient chronicle "The Tale of Bygone Years" was first mentioned in a Chicago recording for 862. In this case growth was recorded as there are already existing, big city for that time.

Rostov the Great was named in 1137 during the reign of Yuri Dolgoruky. In the second half of the eleventh century Rostov - a central city in the North-East of Russia, center of Rostov-Suzdal principality.
