E X P E R I E N C E:

April 2006 – present:
Veterinary Technician
San Francisco Zoological Society (San Francisco, CA)

Zoo nursing duties such as: triage of sick or injured animals, patient exams, calculate and administer drug dosages, perform treatments and vaccines, evaluate patient's natural history in regards to treatment tolerance
Prepare patients and assist doctors in surgery, placement of endotracheal tubes and intravenous catheters including jugular and central lines, control and monitor anesthesia, blood pressure, oxygenation, and fluid therapy
Employ use of diagnostic equipment such as radiology, ultrasound, and electrocardiogram
Work in a dynamic environment including outdoors in all weather conditions
Conduct group tours of the zoo hospital, interact with zoo guests, answer questions regarding animals, wildlife, zoo medicine and biodiversity
Communicate with laboratories nation-wide for appropriate diagnostic tests and research requests for exotic and endangered animals, complete in-house laboratory work including blood work, urinalysis, cytology, microbiology, and cryogenics bank
Perform full necropsy and research associated for all deceased collection animal
Compose and implement procedure for 70 zookeepers and 6 veterinary technicians
Create medical databases and spreadsheets
Cooperate with zookeepers in animal enrichment and behavioral training programs
Log records into ISIS and Med Arks databases
Compile data for in-house research and other studies
Created an inventory of all hospital equipment, supplies and pharmaceuticals, maintain hospital, order supplies, repair equipment and vehicles as needed, troubleshoot diagnostic machines
Use darting pistol, rifle, and blowpipe as needed to administer medication

May 2005 – May 2006:

Execute triage of critically sick animals, monitor and treat in-hospital patients, nursing duties similar to those performed at San Francisco Zoo
Night supervisor of 10 emergency nurses and four assistants, train staff on procedure and proper restraint of animals

Mar 2003 – May 2005:
Aquarist
John G. Shedd Aquarium (Chicago, IL )

Responsible for the quarantine and husbandry of fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals
Assist veterinary staff in medical procedures, sedation, diagnosis and treatment of aquarium animals, worked with veterinary staff to revamp the quarantine protocol
Participate in the capture, restraint, and transport of potentially dangerous animals
Obtained SCUBA certification and dove as needed in exhibits up to 450,000 gallons for animal care and exhibit upkeep
Implement animal training based in the science of operant conditioning
Manage various aquatic filtration systems up to 45,000 gallons
Calculate amount and add chemicals to water in order to achieve specific water quality parameters or to treat animals contained
Member of river otter training team, iguana husbandry team, and staff image team
Aid US fish and wildlife and the D.N.R. as needed

1997 – 2005:
Veterinary Technician
Chicago Veterinary Emergency Services (Chicago, IL )

Triage and inpatient care for the only veterinary emergency hospital in Chicago
Duties similar to those performed at San Francisco Veterinary Specialists
Composed and implemented procedure used by 35 staff technicians and assistants
