Contribute to the procurement and management of a research colony consisting of new and old world non-human primates, rabbits, and rodents for vaccine testing. Create analytical spreadsheets and databases using multiple software programs consistent with stringent FDA guidelines for vaccine experimentation. Assist in creation and amendment of scientific animal protocols. Compose standard operating procedures for all laboratory animal procedures. Primary liaison between principal investigators and veterinary personnel. 2001-2005: National Eye Institute, Priority One Services, National Institute of Health Bethesda, MD Laboratory of Sensorimotor Research (LSR) Technician III Implement and maintain an environmental enrichment program for over 90 non-human primates including 85% pair housing. Duties include ensuring that the caretaking staff performs enrichment duties, as well as my receiving, housing, pole-collaring, and chair training all non-human primates assigned to the LSR. Provide protocol support for the LSR investigators via surgical support entailing, prepping the animal for surgery, task training animals to suit investigator protocols, induction and monitoring of anesthesia and recovery, radiograph techniques, cranial implant cleaning, and routine health maintenance of all animals assigned to the National Eye Institutes? protocols. Assist with perfusion, necropsy and slide preparation of tissue upon completion of the protocol; perform end of study euthanasia and enucleation of rabbits and non-human primates. 2000-2001: National Institute of Mental Health, Priority One Services, National Institute of Health Bethesda, MD Anesthesiologist and Environmental Enrichment Technician Perform anesthesia monitoring of non-human primates for various surgeries on a daily basis, including eyecoil, implant, DNA injection, brain lesions, etc. Manage surgery space by sterilizing surgical instruments, drapes, and other necessary items, as well as performing daily cleanings of recording cylinders, head posts, and acrylic implants. Assist in daily enrichment program, for over 250 non-human primates, including maintaining controlled feeding schedules and a revolving playcage schedule.
